Schon vor gut hundert Jahren hat Rudolf Steiner darauf hingewiesen, dass das Leben in einer zunehmend technisierten Welt durch einen Vertiefungsprozess in den Künsten auszugleichen sei. Es wird gezeigt, wie dieser Impuls im 20. Jahrhundert von verschiedenen Künstlern aufgegriffen und interpretiert worden ist: Die Entfremdung von der Natur im technisch geprägten Alltag und Arbeitsleben fordert jedes Individuum heraus, sich selbst als soziales Kunstwerk aufzufassen und im Sinne der Menschwerdung schöpferische Kräfte in sich wachzurufen. Dieser Weg wird als ein langsames Fortschreiten charakterisiert.
