The significance of chemistry as a school subject with a structure for general education Will be outlined. In addition, the necessity of such an education will be explained. In accordance with the guidelines for education in Waldorf or Rudolf Steiner Schools, a methodological conception of this subject will be presented which gives phenomenology and formalism in the right proportions appropriate for the age of the students. Finally, some social aspects of chemistry which are placed in the tension between action and understanding Will be illuminated.
