Abstract:
Drawing on the results of spiritual research, Rudolf Steiner describes the earth as a living organism endowed with soul and spirit. Against this background, the flowering of plants can be understood as an effect of the earth’s soul, with forces from outside acting on plant growth. Plants form the visible shell of this living earth and simultaneously form a kind of boundary between the earth’s surroundings, in that the purely vegetative growth comes to an end through induction of flowering. This marks the surface of the living earth organism. As a higher-level metamorphosis in the plant kingdom, we can observe how the shape of a plant depends on the level at which the forces from the soul realm of the earth come into a balance with the constructive life forces of the earth. Just as in humans the body’s degradation through the spiritual activity during the day needs to be regenerated at night, we can also speak of sleeping and waking in the earth organism, on the one hand in the annual rhythm, and also in the varying growth patterns of plants.
