N2 - Die synthetische Biologie hat das Ziel, künstliche biologische Systeme für menschliche Zwecke zu konstruieren. Um dieses Ziel verst ndlich zu machen, braucht man ein entsprechendes Konzept von «Leben». In diesem Zusammenhang werden, wie etwa mit dem Ausdruck «lebendige Maschine», durch Analogien technische Eigenschaften auf Lebewesen übertragen, um eine im Sprachgebrauch fehlende Verknüpfung zwischen Lebewesen und technischen Artefakten zu schaffen. Aber kann es so etwas wie eine lebendige Maschine überhaupt geben? Dieser repr sentative Kernbegriff der synthetischen Biologie wird hier mit verschiedenen Ans tzen aus der Philosophie der Biologie und der Technologie analysiert. Ich überprüfe die Merkmale der Künstlichkeit und der technischen Funktionalit t. Dies ermöglicht eine klare Abgrenzung zwischen Lebewesen und Maschinen. Dabei wird deutlich, dass Wortgebilde wie «lebendige Maschine» in der synthetischen Biologie nicht als echte Bezeichnungen zu sehen sind, sondern dass sie als Metaphern verwendet werden, um neue Begrifflichkeiten in die Alltagssprache einzuführen.
N1 - Synthetic biology aims to construct artificial biological systems as means for human ends. This aim requires a corresponding underlying conception of life. In this context, the analogical transfer of properties promotes the creation of terms such as “living machine” in order to fill the lexical gap between living beings and technological artefacts. But is something like a “living machine” at all possible? This core term of synthetic biology is analysed using different approaches from the philosophy of biology and from technology. This comment article examines the properties of artificiality and technical functionality. This allows making clear distinctions between living beings and machines, thus showing that expressions like “living machine” within synthetic biology are not to be taken as proper terms, but as metaphors intended to implant new concepts into everyday language.
