Experimental research on development since the work of H. Driesch and H. Spemann led to the concept of the morp/oogenetic field (A. Gurwitsch, P. Weiss) A multitude of experimentally gained phenomena establish the basis on which this field proves to be an independent entity placed above the material germ and its cells. This entity determines and shapes the whole development of the embryo and thereby progressivly unites itself with the evolving organism. The basic properties of the morphogenetic field coincide with R. Steiners descriptions of the vital-, etheric- or formativeforce-body of the organism. The prevailing reductionist or nominalist mode of thinking obstructs the estimation and the fruitful scientific application of the concept of the morphogenetic field. [...]
