In diesem Beitrag geht es darum, den komplementären Charakter eines holistischen Ansatzes zum reduktionistischen herauszustellen und zu zeigen, wie sie einander bedingen und in einen weiterführenden Prozeß im Umgang mit Landschaft münden. [...]Die Einheit, die man mit dem Begriff anspricht, kann unterschiedlich groß sein (Alpenlandschaft, Mittelgebirgslandschaft, Norddeutsche Tiefebene, ein Tal im Jura, ein Biotop, oder eben nur ein Standort). Ihre Begrenzung hängt von der Intention des Untersuchers ab, der durch sie etwas Einheitliches in der Beobachtung aufsucht. [...] Drei Bestrebungen werden wesentlich: 1) Aufgabe der Ästhetik - sich einlassen auf die Wahrnehmung. 2) Aufsuchen eines lebensgemäßen Leitbildes - Landschaft als System, als Organismus, als Individualität. 3) Entwickeln und immer wieder neu besinnen der Kriterien für Beurteilung, Gestaltung und Pflege. The reductionistic and holistic approaches to landscape are complementary. The former allows for detailed quantification, whereas the latter stresses the personal relation between man and nature and, as a consequence, reveals qualities. The holistic approach follows three distinct steps: Esthetics - emphasizing the significance of perception; Leitbild - regarding landscape as organism or individuality; dynamic criteria for evaluation, realization and maintainance of measures envisaged. It is shown that sustainibility is best guaranteed by support of individual responsibility and reduction of regulations.
