In den sechziger Jahren dieses Jahrhunderts ereignete sich in der Medizin und Pharmakologie eine Katastrophe, wie sie bis dahin nicht in Erscheinung getreten war. Es wurden insgesamt etwa 7000 Kinder geboren, deren Ohren oder Gliedmaßen in auffällig gleichartiger Weise mißgebildet waren. Erst nach jahrelanger, aufwendiger Suche wurde die Ursache für diese Mißbildungen gefunden. Die Mütter dieser Kinder hatten im zweiten Monat ihrer Schwangerschaft ein neues Schlafmittel zu sich genommen, das unter dem Namen Contergan auf dem Markt war. Die wirksame Substanz in Contergan war das synthetisch hergestellte Thalidomid, das als Racemat, d.h. als 1:1-Gemisch der Enantiomeren (+)- und (-)-Thalidomid‚ vorlag. Langjährige Prüfungen bewiesen, daß das (-)-Enantiomer (auch als (5)-Enantiomer bezeichnet) zusätzlich zur Wirkung als Schlafmittel eine teratogene (fruchtschädigende) Wirkung aufwies, die das (+)Enantiomer nicht zeigte. Tierversuche an Ratten hatten keine Mißbildungen ergeben, ein Befund, der bereits 1966 die Herstellerfirma (!) die Frage aufwerfen ließ, inwieweit pharmakologische Versuche an Tieren auf den Menschen übertragbar seien. Hier kann nicht erörtert werden, inwieweit genauere Vorversuche an Tieren oder klinische Studien die Katastrophe hätten verhindern können. Vielmehr soll untersucht werden, wie eine verschwommene Bewußtseinslage in bezug auf Chemie und Pharmazie vorlag, die in dieser für Menschen leidvollen Art offenbar wurde und meiner Meinung nach bis heute noch bei weitem nicht klar genug erfaßt scheint. N1 -The contergan-(thalidomide)-catastrophe has revealed the destructive power of a racemate (an equimolar mixture of stereoisomers in optically inactive form) to generate teratogenic effects in man. The historical development of the chemistry of stereoisomers has to be taken into account as a cause for this disaster. Between the chemistry of the anorganic and living nature there is a threshold of which we need to become conscious: It is situated between the methodical approach leading to the representation of geometrical molecular models and the effects called forth by substances and their related perceptual sensations. The historical development of anorganic chemistry has to be complemented by a conceptual, as well as experimental chemistry that takes into account the life-organisation (in the sense of R. Steiners concept of the etheric body). An approach to this challenge can be found in the active inner participation of the scientist. An understanding of the effect of substances is gained on the basis of consciously experienced sense perceptions and their related sensations. These together unravel the path towards the unconscious levels of one’s own existence and that of the natural contexts, as well.
