Untersuchungen an Knollen transgener Kartoffelpflanzen mit der Empfindlichen Kristallisation

Elemente der Naturwissenschaft 83, 2005, P. 52-65 | DOI: 10.18756/edn.83.52

Abstract:

Potato tubers were investigated with the method of sensitive crystallisation in connection with a project to breed resistance into the variety Bintje using genetic modification. It was possible to show that the whole plant responds to modification with a gene construct and that the construct varies in its reaction to external factors such as growing location, year of cultivation and storage. It was possible clearly to distinguish potatoes with the two gene constructs Ala and Visco from each other and from the parent Bintje. A notable phenomenon was both being able and not being able to differentiate their various lines.

A semi-quantitative evaluation was carried out by comparing the crystallisation pictures and applying graded assessment criteria. This visual evaluation is extended in a second article in this issue using digital scanning and analysis of the same pictures.
