Abstract:

If we take seriously what Rudolf Steiner said in various ways - that self-knowledge is found in the world while knowledge of the world is found in the self - then the question “What is technology in the world?” must be connected with a motive in my own soul. This motive could be characterised as an impulse to develop new abilities. Looking into our soul reveals urges and desires that promise to alleviate our feelings of impotence, vulnerability and loneliness. These same urges and desires are served by the promises of different areas of technology. The mirror of self-reflection reveals these technical solutions to be surrogates and awakens us to the opportunity of transforming our feelings into the very capacities that are essential to attain in the development of the consciousness soul.
