Abstract:

Indigo is a dual-purpose colorant that can be used as both dye and pigment. In textile dye classification it is known as a vat dye whereas manufacturers of artist paints regard it as a pigment.

As chemical elemental analysis of indigo merely gives a yes-or-no answer in the form of numbers and letters, phenomenological methods specific for both dyes and pigments are described which enable clear differentiation between indigo derived either from woad (Isatis tinctoria L.) or through chemical synthesis.
