Abstract:
The “Hofstetter Chöpfli” is located in the Basel region – a strikingly warm and dry region north of the Alps on the southern edge of the Upper Rhine lowlands. The region favours the downy oak (Quercus pubescens), semi-dry grasslands (Mesobromion) and dry grasslands (Xerobromion) in the sun-exposed rocks of the Jurassic limestone hills. My focus is on the characteristic community of different species (plant sociological aspect), their metamorphosis of shape during the year and successive appearance (phenological aspect), and representation of particular expressions of the flora at this location (dynamic and physiognomic aspect). Downy oak forests in Central Europe have a long history and it seems they will have a good future in the face of rapid climate change.
