Abstract:
Crystallisation pictures can be regarded as fractals and compared with each other with respect to their fractal dimension. In the context of sensitive crystallisation studies on tubers of transgenic potato plants (Knijpenga in this issue), digital scans of 216 random samples of crystallisation pictures of transgenic potatoes and controls were treated with a mathematical-morphological procedure and their fractal dimension calculated. Statistical analysis of the results shows that the fractal dimension, a form parameter that is closely related to the picture, is suitable for distinguishing genetically modified constructs from one another and from the unmodified parent variety.
