Abstract:

These pictures are part of a comprehensive study of colour and how it appears in the realm of plants. Green, red, white and black are understood to be the result of gesture, light and darkness. The leaves of the beech tree change from green to the brown of autumn: Expanding into light results in green; the gesture of contraction in light results in the appearance of red. A similar course is shown by the peony where young, growing, compact parts are to be seen in the beginning and where the phase of contraction gives rise to the appearance of red. Disturbances and injuries cause the same colouration. Rules governing the colours of the flower are of a new and higher order. A concise illustration of such rules is given in two further examples.
