Abstract:
Spectra of colourless pictures were produced with dispersion elements or gratings. Certain experimental conditions have to be fulfilled for the apparatus or optical configuration. One such condition for producing spectra is the contrast of the colourless pictures. This paper shows that contrast alone is not a sufficient condition for colours to appear and that conditions can be created experimentally with certain imaging relationships that completely inhibit the appearance of spectra from light-dark contrasts. Thus, besides a picture‘s contrast there is a further necessary condition for making spectral colours arise. This is nameable as imaging condition.
