Abstract:

Horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is one of the recently threatened species. In this article, the correlation between loss of vitality and premature defoliation as well as other environmental factors is discussed. Premature defoliation caused by pests is considered to be linked to carbon balance. The role of horse chestnut in pharmaceutics and cosmetics is outlined with respect to historic treatments, phytotherapeutic aspects and applications in anthroposophical medicine.
